Why IRCC Might Refuse Your PGWP Application

1. Failure to Meet Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for a PGWP, you must meet specific eligibility criteria, including:

Completing a PGWP-eligible program of at least eight months at a designated learning institution (DLI).
Studying full-time throughout your program, except for your final semester.
Graduating from an eligible post-secondary institution, with additional criteria for Quebec-based programs.

2. Missing Required Documents

IRCC requires the submission of one of the following documents with your PGWP application:

An official letter from your DLI confirming completion of your program.
An official transcript from your DLI.
A copy of your transcript from your DLI’s website.

Failing to include any of these documents can lead to a refusal.

3. Unexplained Study Gap

If you took an unauthorized break from your studies without formally explaining the gap to IRCC, your PGWP application might be refused. IRCC allows for leaves of absence for valid reasons, but these must be properly documented and approved.

4. Late Application Submission

You have 180 days from the date your DLI issues your final grades to apply for a PGWP. Submitting your application after this period will result in refusal.

5. Failure to Maintain Legal Status

You must ensure your study permit is valid at some point during the 180-day application window. If your study permit expires before applying, you must restore your status as a student or apply for the PGWP from outside Canada. Violating student visa conditions or overstaying your authorized period can also lead to refusal.
